Blawggers, Hazing and Fraternities

Many blawggers have cleared the path even before I stumbled on blogging almost two years ago. Lately, I’ve discovered a number of blawgs, and I use this term loosely to refer to blogs that are written by lawyers or students of law. Read more »

Google-searching the Supreme Court

Once upon a time, if you do a search at the Supreme Court website for cases or jurisprudence, all you get are decisions or resolutions Supreme Court. You can click, read and quote right away, which is good if you don’t have the luxury of time. The only thing you’ll have to watch out is this – separate opinions (concurring or dissenting) of justices are sometimes presented in a separate page, just like the main decision (without the case title, of course). Google-search for SEC: This site may harm your computer

Let’s say you’re planning to register a corporation and you’re looking for the SEC website to search for information. If you google-search for “SEC“, you’ll discover that Google has added a tag which reads: “This site may harm your computer.” The actual search result looks like this: Read more »

WordPress Plugins: list of great and easy ones

There’s a previous list of useful plugins used in this site, but some plugins in the list got “outdated” when this blog moved to a new server, and was upgraded to WordPress 2.2 and the 0.9.5.2 version of 3 Column K2. Some of the plugins, like the Related Posts and Sociable plugins, somehow reported errors when activated.

Some of the plugins still work without a hitch. These are Akismet (anti-spam), Page Links To (sets a “links_to” meta key with a URL value that will be be used when listing WP pages), Simple Tags (creates a list of Technorati tags at the bottom of the post), Ultimate Tag Warrior, and Top Commenters (the name is self-explanatory; it has been deactivated as part of an “experiment”). The flurry of events in the Philipine blogging scene could very well reflect the steady growth of blogging, not only in the local scene, but also worldwide. Read more »

YOU – TIME’s Man of the Year

But look at 2006 through a different lens and you’ll see another story, one that isn’t about conflict or great men. It’s a story about community and collaboration on a scale never seen before. It’s about the cosmic compendium of knowledge Wikipedia and the million-channel people’s network YouTube and the online metropolis MySpace. It’s about the many wresting power from the few and helping one another for nothing and how that will not only change the world, but also change the way the world changes.”

State of the Blogosphere (Technorati) – Consistency is the key

Just recently, Technorati’s Dave Sifry posted the “State of the Blogosphere, October, 2006“, which reflects that a total of 57 Million+ blogs are being tracked by Technorati. During the 3rd quarter of 2006, 3 Million blogs were created per month and 100,000 blogs were created everyday. You may have your own opinion, but I must say that those figures are impressive. Customizing K2 WordPress theme: resources and tutorials

After deciding that K2 is a great theme and installing it, you may want to customize how your K2 looks and works. There’s a list of great plugins of the install-activate-and-go type. For plugins that require some code tweaking, I mentioned the Bot-Check WordPress plugin vs. Comment Spam. It would have been better to include that post in a general post on plugins that require manual code changes, but since it’s done, we’ll just include these plugins below. For tutorials on how to further customize your K2, you will find these resources very, very helpful: Read more »

Anonymity

I recall MLQ3 saying in iBlog2 that bloggers are, in a sense, leaders – they are willing to risk their reputation by putting forward their opinions and beliefs for the whole world to dissect (or in similar words). On the other side of the spectrum is the anonymous blogger – he who prefers the relative anonymity and freedom offered by the web. Of course, there are various reasons, some of which may be legitimate, for a blogger’s decision to remain anonymous. One reason, unfortunately, is cowardice. Read more »

Building a Better Blog or Blawg

This post was originally intended to discuss sitemeter and analytics, which logically follows the previous posts on platforms and search engines. After the Baguio weekend vacation, however, I’ve decided to consolidate and include everything done so far in this site. Read more »
