Vacant positions at the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG)

—————-(through email)

We would like to invite all qualified persons to submit their resume to the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG).

Republic Act 9417 expanded the OSG providing its lawyers with more compensation and benefits. Currently, the office has 29 vacant solicitor positions.

The Solicitor position carries with it judicial rank so there is a requirement of 5 years practice of law. Those with less than 5 years practice of law can nevertheless apply for the position of Associate Solicitor. Read more »

Google-searching the Supreme Court

Once upon a time, if you do a search at the Supreme Court website for cases or jurisprudence, all you get are decisions or resolutions Supreme Court. You can click, read and quote right away, which is good if you don’t have the luxury of time. The only thing you’ll have to watch out is this – separate opinions (concurring or dissenting) of justices are sometimes presented in a separate page, just like the main decision (without the case title, of course). WITNESS: He said, “Where am I, Cathy?”
ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you?
WITNESS: My name is Susan! Read more »

There were previous suggestions for topics, but that was last year. Maybe let’s open a thread where anyone could suggest possible legal thesis topics. It would definitely add to your positive karma. =)

Why lawyers should never ask a Question if they are not prepared for the Answer

During a trial in a small town in a southern state, a prosecuting attorney called his first witness to the stand, a grandmotherly, elderly woman. He approached her and asked, “Mrs. Jones, do you know me?

She responded, “Why, yes I do know you, Mr. Williams. I’ve known you since you were a young boy, and frankly, you’ve been a disappointment to me. You lie, you cheat on your wife, you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs. You think you’re a big shot when you haven’t the brains to realize you never will amount to anything more than a two-bit paper pusher. Yes, I know you.” Read more »
