“New Way Gangs Steal, Rape and Kidnap Girls” – Perpetuating a Hoax (So what?)

There’s a message, purportedly coming from the Philippine National Police (PNP), warning everyone about a new modus operandi of lawless elements to rape/kidnap girls and steal. I’ve seen it going around social networking sites, primarily facebook. It reads:

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY.

This message is for every girl who goes to college or office alone. If you find any child crying on the road, showing his/her address and asking you to take him/her to that address, take that child to the nearest police station. DO NOT TAKE THE CHILD TO THE ADDRESS.

It is a new way of gangs to STEAL, RAPE and KIDNAP girls.

Please circulate to all. Don’t feel shy to copy this as your status. Your one message may save a girl.

The quote comes with a photo, usually a girl being gagged and apparently coming out of a car’s trunk. The “Philippine variant” is made to appear to come from the PNP. At first glance, it comes from the PNP PIO twitter account, but a closer inspection of the format reveals that it could not possibly come from a twitter account. The photo shared in facebook looks like this:

New Way Gangs Steal, Rape and Kidnap Girls: A Hoax

New Way Gangs Steal, Rape and Kidnap Girls: A Hoax

Now, whether or not this is a hoax, the advice given makes perfect sense. It would be safer for everyone concerned, the good samaritan and the child, if the latter is properly turned over to the authorities — police or a social worker. Would you agree?
