There’s an alleged plan to impeach Chief Justice Reynato Puno. Reports say it could be linked to a pending disqualification case of Olivia Paras against Negros Oriental Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong and/or the move for Charter Change. The Chief asked politicians to spare the Supreme Court from “partisan manipulation“.
According to the Inquirer:
The threat to remove Puno from his post is reportedly tied to the Supreme Court’s alleged non-promulgation of a decision disqualifying an incumbent House member despite the concurrence in mid-2008 of 14 justices. (Read full story here; Inquirer opinion.)
An article in ABS-CBN News reads:
Critics of President Arroyo on Sunday said that the alleged administration’s move to impeach Chief Justice Reynato Puno is tied to a “game plan for Charter change (Cha-cha) and allow Mrs. Arroyo to become prime minister. Members of civil society who formed themselves to watch the forthcoming new appointments to the Supereme Court should do the same for the position of Chief Justice. We might not be able to second guess the meaning and motives of the move to impeach Chief Justice Puno.
A few years before Marcos declared Martial Law, there was a lot of talk that it was a matter of time before Marcos will declare Martial Law. That loose talk turned to reality later on. The rest is history.
For us today, we should ever be vigilant and we should have the courage to oppose any threat to our cherished liberty.

Even our judiciary is not at all shielded from the grappling hands of bad politics. This should be a test case as to how our judiciary remains untainted and untroubled by the hands of political machination and greed.
