All work and no play kills a lawyer, well, everyone. Maybe I don’t need to cite statistics to prove that work-related stress and pressure are the usual culprits in illness/sickness (and, unfortunately, death) among lawyers. True, so many of us have learned to cope and deal with stress, but that’s not a guarantee that stress won’t have its toll in the long run. Prolonged exposure to stress adversely affects the immune system. So we take time to relax.
This month of August, we have some time to relax because there are two long weekends. As reflected in the list of National Regular and Special Holidays for 2008 (and 2009) in the Philippines, there are two declared holidays. The first is Ninoy Aquino Day (18 August 2008), which means that August 17-18 is a long weekend. But there’s more — August 19 is also a holiday for those in Quezon City (Quezon City Day). Too bad for us who have trial schedules outside Quezon City.
Then there’s the National Heroes Day (25 August 2008), which means that August 23-25 is another long weekend.
Now, go and make your vacation plans. Or maybe you prefer to stay at home and sleep. Whatever your preference is, make sure to relax. Enjoy!
By the way, while your having your vacation, you might want to think why, among all Philippine universities, only UP (rank – 398) and Ateneo (rank – 451) placed in the Times-QS World University Rankings 2007.

Hello. For those of us in Quezon City, does the special holiday pay premium apply? (30% for being a special non-working holiday)
My company claims that it doesn’t apply and I want to know for sure.
