In previous years:
The University of the Philippines (U.P.) College of Law has announced the holding of the Law Aptitude Examination (LAE) for academic year 2008-2009. The LAE is the entrance exam for the UPLaw.
The LAE is scheduled on 25 November 2007 (Sunday, 7:30 a.m.), with test centers in UP Diliman, UP Cebu, UP Mindanao (Davao City) and UP Baguio.
Anyone planning to enter the U.P. College of Law, who has finished or is finishing at least a bachelor’s degree in the arts or sciences from a recognized college or university, is qualified to take the examination upon prior application and proper identification and registration. An applicant can take LAE a maximum of three (3) times effective SY 2007-2008.
Applicants with yearly gross family income of P100,000.00 or less are exempted from payment of testing fee.
The last day of filing of application forms is on 16 November 2007 (without fine) or 23 November 2007 (with fine). Click here to download the application form.
Update (22 January 2008): I heard that the LAE results were released today. Here’s the UNOFFICIAL list, courtesy of Jester (will still have to verify the list tomorrow). Please CROSS-CHECK with the official list posted at the UP College of Law. Please note that the written exam is only the first part of the selection process. There are 301 who passed the written exam. The second phase is the panel interview (schedules will be announced later by UPLaw).
Update (9 April 2008): The official list of those who made it through LAE and are qualified to enroll as first year students at the UP College of Law for the SY 2008-2009 is posted in the UPLaw official website. First part is here and the second part is here.
Update: As appearing in the UPLAW website: “For school year 2009-2010, the LAE will be administered on Sunday, 23 November 2008, in U.P. Diliman, U.P. Cebu, U.P. Baguio and U.P. Davao.” Deadline is on 14 November 2008 (without fine) or 21 November 2008 (with fine). The form may be downloaded from this link (.doc format or .pdf format). Good luck.

Update (12 February 2010): 2010-2011 LAE Results released today. See comment of Nina, with thanks, for the list (click here). Waiting is over. Congratulations to those who made it. To the rest, it’s just a detour. Good luck and God bless.

when is the up lae result for 09-10 gonna be released?
Im also eager for the results. Passed or failed, i’ll be studying law this year. Pero xiempre mas maganda kung sa UP. Hehe
does anybody here knows how the lae – test alone – is scored?
The 2010-2011 LAE exam was on sunday at 7AM. I came to a party on saturday and went home drunk at 2AM. I thought what the hell, the exam will just take maybe 2.5 hours. The plan was to finish it early even if I have to guess most of the questions. Too late to know that it will take 4 hours with no break time in between. Also, all the chapters are timed and it is considered cheating if you answer ahead of the schedule. I was also taking the exam technically on an empty stomach since I vomited all my breakfast before I left home.
I am currently a Senior Software Engineer to one of the multinational corporations here in the Phil. I took the LAE just to see if I can make it. If I fail then its ok since I will just continue with my current profession. If I pass then its a problem since I will not know what to do. However, given my hangover during the exam, I guess there is no hope..
OMG, same sentiments here! Childhood dream ko ang maglawyer but at present I work as a media practitioner. Wala na sana akong balak mag-aral but I’m getting bored with what I’m doing so I decided to take the LAE, wala lang, kung suswertehin ba ako o ano. If I fail then tuloy ang buhay, siguro hindi talaga para sa akin (asa rin ako diba, nagself study lang ako ng modules ng LAE for crammers for two weeks). If I pass, magpapanic ata ako bigla. One thing’s for sure, my boss will kill me.
Goodluck, folks.
Another thing.. I am currently 25 years old. Do you thing its too late to change careers? Buti ka pa may review. =(
25? Keri pa yan. Some change careers in their 30s and 40s, and yet they are successful in their fields.
Nagrereview ako during my free time, which is four hours a day. Two hours before going to work and two hours bago matulog. If I get lucky, I review during my free time at work. That is lunchtime with my other half. Hehe.
are you a reporter? if so, what beat do you cover?
Nope, hehe. I work behind the camera.
I called the COL-OCS and asked when the results will be released. Got disappointed when i was told that it’s gonna be out on the 2nd or 3rd week of Feb. Ang tagal pa! Really can’t wait.
I think they are prolonging our agony. Much as the old saying goes “A watched pot never boils”, our eagerness to make it to UP Law keeps us from checking UP Law’s website for any updates.
I am fervently praying that I make it. I have not been prayerful for most of my life but this time, I hope He answers my prayer.
how was the exam???!?!?
@help
The exam was okay. Not sure how the essay part will be graded though. Maybe the essay part was put in place to somehow make the exam a little more complicated. (At least the grading part)
Hello help:
Here’s my take on LAE, i hope you get some pointers out of this. First, the LAE is a test of endurance. yes, assuming everyone takes the test with the same aptitude, the ones who will make it are those who are able to withstand the rigors of the test. It is long, around 270 items cramped in 4 hours. plus 30-min. for the essay. I think the exam was designed in order of most difficult (challenging, IQ test, Math) to easy (English skills) then climbs again to challenging (essay).
There is also the degree of pacing. The test makers are playing with the test-taker’s head. For example, the math and IQ parts are given very short time periods, despite its length. On the other hand, the reading comprehension part was too long for questions that can be answered in half the time (however, there are traps in seemingly easy questions, such as asking for synonyms based on context clues).
Third, the LAE is a test of accuracy. The answer sheet is not the most ideal. One should shade the appropriate circle of his or her answer choice, however, these circles are microscopic and the spacing between the numbers is almost regrettable. I find this really limiting my time during the exam. Halfway through most of the subtest, I review my numbering only to find that i was shading the wrong circle and it happened throughout the duration of the test. and remember, you dont have much time to correct this inaccuracy. This leaves you around 5 or more lost points simply by retracing the correct number.
You have to remember that you are doing all these — check and rechecking — under the same time allotted to complete that subtest. sigh! It gets really frustrating as the exam goes on. To keep a cool head under enormous pressure is mind-blowing.
On the matter of test questions, most if not all subtests are predictable. The hardest questions are almost always towards the beginning, tappering off towards the end. Being bogged down on one item means you might lose 5 easy points scattered towards the middle and the end, usually the last question is very easy.
Now to the content: Suppose Mr. X is a professor who gives an exam every Tuesday; Suppose today is Wednesday; Suppose I argue that based on the premise, Mr. X is not going to give a test; Have I a valid argument?
One way to score a lot of points in the LAE is to master valid reasoning. Hence, brushing up with Logic, particularly inference logic, would give you plenty of points. Review modus tollens, modus ponens and disjunctive syllogism, hypothetical and dilemma. As for classical logic, review the categorical syllogism. Do not be intimidated by these latin names, these are very easy logical patterns that you can memorize and apply during the test. remember, most logical argument (if not all) is a pattern. And you can master those in a month or maybe two.
I mentioned logic first because your ability to understand the LAE questions will be instrumental in dealing with the rest of the questions, especially english and reading comprehension. On another note, even if you do not master the latin phrases, make sure your head is clear of any biases when dealing with logic. Common sense, for the most part, will work. But how common is common sense? Therefore, why not master the forms that will give you a pattern for answering the questions, right?
Reading comprehension is fair but has twists and turns. the good thing about this part is that the time given is twice what you need. Be careful though when answering about the synonym part as it’s tricky.
The Math portion is beyond me. Out of 40 Qs I answered maybe 15 correctly. The rest i simply guessed. Its not hopeless though. Most of the questions are easy, however, one needs the right pacing to answer them all. Speed and accuracy is important. Had i known about setting up equations to answer arithmetic questions, i would have answered more correctly. As you’ve guessed, there are questions on statistics (some definition, can you believe it i.e. what is the mode?) I suggest you get a grip on these definitions and concepts. Age, rate, some logic, percentage, statistics, permutation, combination, etc. not too difficult if you know how to answer them but extremely hopeless if you’re a mathematical tabularasa.
There is also the IQ part. This is the part that you either see a pattern or you dont; because in the final analysis, one cannot study for an IQ test because it’s supposed to be innate. Let me just give you an idea. What i dont like about this subtest is the pattern recognition. I went double eye trying to match and deconstruct the objects. its my weakness.
The English part is pretty standard, and that includes the vocabulary and word analogy. The key here is to know and be familiar with a large base of English words and how they are used in a sentence. Some words are just out of this world. These are, in a sense, an aberration on the exam because those words are not even used anymore. It’s good to know them, but not necessary. Read plenty of english books and periodicals and articles because the words, sometimes, even the phrases and expressions, are contemporary.
As far as i can recall, these are my impressions. Another key aspect to consider is college grade. Sadly, only a very high LAE grade can pull my chances on being accepted by UPLaw. My grades are terrible and I think I only did okey at LAE. Only Ok is not good. haay. but that’s life.
hi!!Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it! Hope you pass the exam! Good luck!!:D
btw, are you from UP Diliman?..How terrible are your grades?If you dont mind my asking
@hyper
I hope it’s not true. Sana naman next week na yung results, para malaman natin kung magta-try na tayo sa ibang school (at least for those who are planning to enroll this june). Haaay.. Nakakakaba lalo.
Any idea on the number of 2009 LAE examinees?
sabi ni ate guard sa law, may chismis daw siya na next week na raw.
sana next week na nga.
I was told that around a thousand took the LAE last November.
To help: I have 3 Fives and 2 threes…its terrible.
but you sound confident regarding the exam.. I think they consider the exam results first and then rank the people based on their GWA. So if you did well in the exam then you still have a high probability of getting in….???
@help: a friend of mine from UP Law told me that your LAE score accounts for 70% and your undergrad GWA accounts for 30% of your “score”..
@paper&anxious
I applied on the last filing date, that’s a Friday. If i recall it right, i’m applicant number 1762,,,so it gives you an idea on how many took the exam. On the other hand, there were other test sites all around the country. Its safe to say there are around 2K in diliman, and maybe 1K ++ in other areas….
to make matters worse.. it doesn’t even matter if your Cum Laude at times.. sometimes the goat of your class can pull off a miracle of sorts and pass it.. hehe
Im keeping my fingers crossed since i did not make any preaparations except for answering some mind-boggling puzzles na sa tingin ko eh kahit high school kayang sagutin. Well, good luck.
